Our HE-led city demonstrator project, in partnership with the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) and 40+ universities, harnesses this collective power. Louisville has experienced clashes between armed militia and Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters, reflecting broader demonstrations across American cities. These confrontations, often reported by news outlets like the Lexington Herald Leader, are largely fueled by calls for justice.

Specifically, protesters demand accountability for the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT, by Louisville Metro Police officers on March 13, 2020. In one notable incident, a heavily armed group calling themselves "American patriots" retreated from downtown after being confronted by BLM activists.

The Black Lives Matter movement, born from a social media post, has ignited global discussions on race and inequality. In an October 2016 TED conversation with Mia Birdsong, founders Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi shared insights on leadership, hope, and inspiration amidst painful realities.

We recently celebrated significant wins, securing new protections for leatherback sea turtles in California and critical habitat for green sea turtles on both coasts. These successes highlight our ongoing commitment to their survival.
