Can investors drive a circular economy transition?

Investors are increasingly backing the circular economy, reflecting a growing awareness. Paul Bodnar (BlackRock) and Audrey Choi (Morgan Stanley) highlight its long-term value and investment opportunities, especially given finite resources. This discussion is from an Ellen MacArthur Foundation show.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a UK charity, champions the circular economy, which aims to eliminate waste, circulate materials, and regenerate nature through design.

That's Wild: Bats' Ventricular Folds of Mayhem

Scientists recently discovered bats, like Tuvan throat singers and death-metal vocalists, produce sound using ventricular folds instead of vocal cords. A Danish biologist found bats use these for low-frequency calls. With their ability to also make extremely high-pitched calls, bats possess an unparalleled vocal range. The Center for Biological Diversity argues this makes them more akin to grindcore vocalists, who utilize both very low and very high frequencies.

The Center for Biological Diversity, a 501c3 nonprofit, works to secure a future for all species through science, law, and creative media. Check out our video to hear biodiversity-loving grindcore artists and see brutally cute bats. Learn more at biologicaldiversity.org or email us at center@biologicaldiversity.org.

That's Wild: Octopus Females Chuck Shells at Males

Scientists recently filmed octopuses throwing seashells and debris at each other, possibly for social reasons. This adds them to a select group of animals known to hurl objects. Females initiated most throws (66%), often during mating, with 17% hitting their underwater targets.

The Center for Biological Diversity is a 501c3 nonprofit based in Tucson, Arizona. We believe human welfare is deeply linked to nature and biodiversity. Through science, law, and creative media, we work to protect lands, waters, and climate, securing a future for all species on the brink of extinction.

Amazon's Plastic Problem

Amazon, the world's largest retailer, generated an estimated 709 million pounds of plastic packaging waste last year from its e-commerce operations. This represents an 18% increase from 2020, equating to enough plastic to circle the Earth over 800 times in the form of air pillows.

Oceana reports that up to 26 million pounds of this plastic, primarily damaging plastic film, is projected to pollute the world's waterways and seas, posing a significant threat to marine life.

What's Happening at Thacker Pass? The Fight Over Lithium, Greenwashing, and Sacred Sites

As a Federal Court ruling nears on January 5th, opponents warn the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine in Nevada is already damaging sacred sites. Lithium Nevada Corporation has begun digging test pits and installing infrastructure where Native Americans conduct ceremonies. Tribes argue this violates permit agreements, contending new authorizations terminated older ones, with attorney Will Falk suggesting the company is "lying to get a headstart" with BLM's approval.

Thacker Pass, or Peehee Mu'huh, is a sacred site for regional tribes, used for ceremonies, gathering, and as a massacre site. Tribal leaders emphasize their responsibility to protect these places, asserting the mine violates religious freedoms and consultation rights. The January 5th hearing is the final oral argument in lawsuits. Support protection efforts: https://givebutter.com/protectthackerpass. Learn more: https://ProtectThackerPass.org.
