Why is Lithium Americas Splitting Into Two Companies?

Lithium Americas Corporation (LAC) is splitting into two entities: Lithium Americas, focusing on North American projects like Thacker Pass, and Lithium International, managing Cauchari-Olaroz in Argentina. This restructuring is reportedly aimed at limiting liability, accessing U.S. Department of Energy loans, and distancing the company from its Chinese connections and significant issues at the Argentine site.

The Cauchari-Olaroz project, 44.8% owned by LAC and 46.7% by China's Ganfeng Lithium, has been subject to allegations of human rights violations by The Washington Post and saw two worker deaths in October. Critics suggest LAC seeks to bypass Republican opposition and federal funding hurdles by separating from its China ties and the associated human rights and environmental concerns, which are seen as mirroring potential issues at Thacker Pass.

Dixie Valley Toads Win Final Protection

After five years of legal action by the Center for Biological Diversity, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service finalized Endangered Species Act protection for the Dixie Valley toad. These extremely rare amphibians, previously under emergency protection, face acute threat from a geothermal power plant likely to dry up their critical hot springs. As the Center’s Great Basin Director Patrick Donnelly stated, "Renewable energy is essential to combating the climate emergency, but it can’t come at the cost of extinction."

The Center for Biological Diversity is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to protecting all species through science, law, and creative media, believing human welfare is deeply linked to nature's diversity. Saving Howlers, Jaguars and More From Pet Trade

Mexico's rich biodiversity, home to howler monkeys and jaguars, is severely threatened by illegal wildlife trade. Thousands of animals are poached from their habitats annually, suffering and dying to be sold as exotic pets, often facilitated through social media.

An undercover investigation by the Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit, exposed widespread trafficking. Devastating footage of kidnapped baby howler monkeys, used to entice buyers, can be seen in this video. Learn more about this issue: biodiv.us/3Fe3gBq.

The Center works through science, law, and media to protect all species and their habitats, ensuring a wild world for future generations. For more information, visit our website: biologicaldiversity.org.

All Things Have Standing: 4.7 -- Future Stories -- Machine Virtue

Prof. Shannon Vallor, Baillie Gifford Chair in AI Ethics, explores whether machines can possess virtue for harmonious human-AI coexistence. She examines virtue's meaning for AI, its link to trustworthiness, and the role of value alignment, concluding with ethical and design challenges.

The course "All Things Have Standing," from Carnegie Council and Fighter Steel Education, draws inspiration from the "Spark Hunter" audio drama's idea that all things have ethical standing. It explores AI and environmental ethics, their psychology, philosophy, and global challenges.

Clearcuts and Salmon in the Oregon Coast Range

Industrial logging in Oregon's coastal mountains has replaced old-growth forests with monocrop plantations, releasing greenhouse gases, decimating biodiversity, and severely harming rivers through pollution and habitat destruction. This environmental degradation contributes to a severe crisis for salmon and steelhead across Washington, Oregon, and California.

Hundreds of salmonid populations have been destroyed, and remaining ones are critically endangered, with Pacific salmon numbers down by 98-99%. Urgent action is vital for their survival: protect forests by stopping industrial logging, remove dams and restore aquatic habitats, halt commercial fishing and pollution, and stabilize global warming.
